Bay Area Used Boxes started with a perfectly good computer box thrown in a recycling bin. We operate an online store and receive product from our suppliers in boxes. Being frugal and concerned about the environment we saved our boxes figuring that we'd use them. Unfortunately, while we receive stuff in large boxes we typically send it out in small ones. The number of large boxes grew, taking up more and more space. Eventually, we had to accept that saving more boxes simply did not make sense; there was little chance we'd ever use them. On one fateful day our next shipment arrived in another large box and with a little sadness we took it down to the recycling bin.

It was an impressive box. High quality, sturdy box in nearly perfect condition, the type of box used to ship computers. As it hit the bottom of the recycling bin a realization came. On one hand, boxes are expensive and it seems like people are always looking for them. On the other hand, boxes are a pain and it seems like people are always throwing them out. Couldn't a system be built to get more boxes reused? Or at least couldn't we find boxes we saved a better home than the recycling bin? Efficiency, frugality, and environmental ethics are all values we strongly respect and the idea was exciting.

It could be said that Bay Area Used Boxes was born that day, but it wouldn't be entirely true. We weren't sure if people really wanted used boxes. We didn't know if people would be willing to pay for them. We started with the intent to just sell our boxes really cheaply to keep them out of the recycling bin. To our surprise many more people wanted boxes than we could supply. Most importantly, they were truly grateful to be able to find boxes so cheaply and conveniently. It is because of their smiles and gratitude that Bay Area Used Boxes was born. We sincerely hope to be able to successfully provide the Bay Area with boxes in inexpensive, convenient, environmentally friendly, and yes, profitable manner.

The reaction the very first time one tries to shop for a box is probably nearly universal sticker shock. New boxes are expensive! Plus, until that first time we try to buy a box we probably used, thrown away, recycled, and stumbled over hundreds of boxes without ever giving it a second thought. Boxes are such an every day item and so often a nuisance to get rid of that we naturally assume them to be an item of inconsequential value. First time movers might not even think about boxes until its time to pack when they realize that their boxes will cost them hundreds, even thousands of dollars. All of a sudden an every day item you've tripped over your whole life is extremely valuable and is now nowhere to be found!
